The eternal flame stands in its permanent spot under "The Sphere" sculpture Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in New York's Battery Park. The flame was lit during a ceremony on 9/12/2002 with world leaders in attendance to mark the one year anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. The sculpture that stood in the fountain of the World Trade Center plaza and was damaged in the fall of the twin towers, is now an interim memorial to those who died.
